Beerschot Coach Peter Maes Refining Abdoulie Sanyang in Attacking

On Sunday, KAA Gent seemed set to win easily against Beerschot, but the two Belgian teams got stuck at a 2-2 draw. Gambian right-winger Abdoulie (Bamba) Sanyang of Beerschot ushered in the turnaround with a fine goal.

Tom Saintfiet, the Belgian national coach of The Gambia, obviously liked to see that happen.

Bamba Sanyang’s reunion with Beerschot coach Peter Maes from Lommel.

The contact between the two has always been good. “It is a blessing for Bamba that he can now work with Peter Maes again,” says Scorpions’ coach Saintfiet to Gazet Van Antwerpen.

“Maes gives him a lot of confidence. For a young guy like Bamba, that’s very important. But, he still has a margin for growth. It’s still not a finished product,” Tom Saintfiet said.

The hardest part now is finding the right position for him. “He’s never going to be a goal-getter,” Saintfiet said.

Bamba is therefore not a pure striker, rather a flanker. Of course, you can play him in different positions in the attacking compartment, but actually, he performs best in a free role.”

Sanyang will be allowed to prove himself again on Saturday afternoon. Beerschot will play against Union at home, one of the revelations of the start of the Belgian league season.
