Police in The Gambia have detained one Yusupha Jambang. Mr. Jambang was caught with an unspecified quantity of cannabis (Ganja). Jambang was driving the Unite Democratic party’s pickup truck when the police stop was made. He had earlier tried to evade police arrest, resulting to him allegedly damaging a police car.  Jambang’s case has been referred to the Bundung police station for further processing.  The registration number of the UDP vehicle that the drugs were found is: BJL 2870R

According to a top Gambian law enforcement officer, when the patrolling officers stopped Jambang, he refused to stop. The police then chased him. It was during the police’s hot chase pursuit of the fleeing driver and supporter that he allegedly damaged the police car, said our source.

The officer said Jambang has been charged with damage to property, while his drug possession case has been referred to the Drug Law Enforcement Agency of The Gambia (DELAG).

Meanwhile, the UDP has issued a statement, in which the party has categorically dissociated itself from Yusupha Jambang, the man, who the police had arrested with drugs. The UDP says Jambang is not a member of their party.

“It has come to the attention of the United Democratic Party that one of our vehicles that was on maintenance at a mechanic workshop was last night intercepted by the police patrol team and bonds of cannabis were found with the driver. The UDP wants to make it categorically clear that the driver at the time of the incident is not a member of the party but a mechanic tasked to repair the vehicle in question,” said the UDP leadership.

“The United Democratic Party commends the Gambia Police Force for its continued vigilance in fighting crime and asks that a thorough investigation be done and the culprits punished for breaking the laws of The Gambia to the letter. The UDP is disappointed that the mechanic betrayed the trust of the party by allegedly being in possession of cannabis while using our vehicle. The party is offering to cooperate with the police to make sure this matter is put to rest; and the UDP continues to strive for a crime-free Gambia,” the statement stated.
