Athletics competitions have begun on Friday morning in the Tokyo Olympics, with the 100m women’s sprinters taking off. Gambia’s Gina Bass reached the semi-finals with a chrono of 11.12, which gave her fourth place in the fifth race.

By the same occasion, Gina Bass has set a new 100m women’s national record as other athletes from Malawi and Switzerland did each for their countries.

Malawi’s record was run by 23-year-old Asimenye Simwaka, who finished with 11.68. In his run, despite the new top mark, he was last and did not make it.

Better went for Mujinga Kambundji, a Swiss woman whose new personal and national record of 10.95 – took the 29-year-old woman’s second run to the semi-finals for the second time.

Gambia’s new record holder Gina Bass reached the semi-finals with a time of 11.12, which gave her fourth place in the fifth race.

One of the favorites, British runner Dina Asher-Smith, who finished second in the first race with 11.07 seconds and moved firmly into the semi-finals, did not miss the distance. However, he was outlasted by Teahna Daniels, an American with three centuries.

The women’s 100m semi-finals will be run on Saturday.
