Mile Two prison has been engulfed with Coronavirus cases, Freedom Newspaper can reveal. Two confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported at the nation’s oldest prison facility. Some of the prisoners have been relocated for quarantine.

Gambia’s National COVID-19 task force held a meeting today to discuss the way forward in managing the new coronavirus cases at mile two. The meeting had recommended for what it called “a containment procedure to curb the spread of the infection.”

The prison command was part of the stakeholders meeting. They have launched an appeal for the prisoners to be taken to an isolation center to curb further infection.

“There was a meeting with the prison management on the issue of the positive prisoners, and they said they preferred the prisoner to be taken to our isolation center. We then decide to use one of the hotels and they will provide the security,” said our source.

Gambia’s Health Ministry has commented yet on the prison Coronavirus outbreak. Sources close to the Ministry have expressed concerned about the possible exacerbation of the infection rate if not handled with utmost care and urgency.
