Overview

The charity Afrikaya was formed in 2007. Why? To build a nursery school for underprivileged children in the Gambia. The creation of the school is to help this community that lives a hand to mouth existence to take control of their lives and end their poverty through education.

Afrikaya is regulated by the UK Charity Commission and was incorporated as a charity in the Gambia in January 2011.

The vision began when Geoff and Di Miles visited the area to learn West African drumming and met an inspirational man, Kebba Jaina. Concerned that his community had little opportunity to become educated, earn a living and free themselves from poverty, he wanted to create a school.

Sadly, Kebba has since died, but his dream lives on through Afrikaya. Afrikaya are working closely with the local community and have set up a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) there. The local PTA have named a tree on the school site “The Kebba Jaina Tree”. A symbol of STRENGTH, GROWTH and LIFE – a truly fitting tribute to his memory.

A piece of land in New Yundum has been purchased by the charity. It has dropped a bore hole and water, pumped by solar power, is available to the community. Enough compressed earth bricks have been made for the entire build. The build will start as soon as Afrikaya has raised sufficient funds.
