The Gambia women’s U-20 national team now have to fight for survival on Sunday against Morocco after losing the first leg of a second round Fifa-U20 women’s world cup qualifier. The Gambians were beaten 3-1 in this away leg for them. Goals from Sofia Bouftini, Mahy Kawtar in the first half and El Amrani Oumayma in the second half put the match beyond The Gambia who replied though with a consolation but potentially vital away goal through Fatoumata Jammeh.
Coach Foday Bah told the GFF media that the early goals from the Moroccans caused problems for his side but praised the team for its resilience against a strong opponent. “I think overall the second half performance was great. The goal came too early and a penalty followed then it became a bit difficult to regain the momentum of possession and space but my girls charged and were disciplined against the opponent. We will work on our weaknesses and come back stronger,” Bah said.
The second leg is slated for Sunday that would be a home match for The Gambia. Both legs were fixed to be played in Morocco due to travel difficulties.
