The Gambia Under-20 female football team, which last week could not travel to Morocco to play the first leg of a World Cup qualifying tie initially scheduled for the 4th December, has eventually arrived in Rabat.

According to the Gambia Football Federation, GFF, the team could not make it to Morocco in time for the initial scheduled date after Morocco closed its air space to commercial flights as a preventive measure against the spread of the new Covid-19 variant.

“We had to work with the Moroccan football federation and Caf on the possibility of rescheduling the match as we arranged a special charter flight. The only way to enter Morocco now is by charter flight. We are hopeful that there will be way out,” GFF secretary general Lamin Jasseh told The Standard last week.

On Saturday, the GFF confirmed that the team eventually traveled and would now play both legs of the qualifiers in Morocco due to that country’s corona virus preventive policy.  The first leg, the away one, will be played today Monday while the second leg, the home match for The Gambia, will be played at the same venue on Wednesday. The Gambian girls are seeking to eliminate Morocco in their quest for a place in the Fifa Under- 20 World Cup. In the first round of the qualifiers, they eliminated Burkina Faso to reach this stage.
