Gambians Mourn Death of Brikama United Female Defender

Gambians took to social media especially on Facebook, to mourn the demise of Brikama United’s female team defender Jankey Bojang, who passed away on Tuesday.

The club announced her passing on its Facebook page Tuesday, stating that the central defender died in Kanfenda, where she was undergoing treatment.

Bojang missed the whole of last season due to a long illness. She was laid to rest on Tuesday evening at 5pm in her native Casa Kunda village.

“Jankey was beautiful both in and out of the field of play and if discipline can prevent someone from death, then she would have lived forever because she was very disciplined,” the club wrote on Facebook.”

”She respected everyone at the club, both teammates and her coaches,” a colleague of hers explained.

“What a loss to our football. A very bright and talented young girl,” commented Ebou Faye on the club’s Facebook post.

Faye together with hundreds of people who commented on the post, extended their condolences to the bereaved family and teammates of the deceased.

The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) said football house learnt with great sorrow and sadness of Bojang’s demise.

Published on GFF’s website, the federation’s president, Lamin Kabba Bajo, described Jankey Bojang’s demise as a monumental loss to Gambian football.

“Describing her as a talented, disciplined and hardworking defender, Kabba on behalf of his Executive Committee and staff send their  deepest condolences to the family of the bereaved and Brikama United Football Club,” GFF stated. “While praying for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace in Jannatul Firdaus, he also prayed for Allah to give the family the fortitude to bear what he described as an irreparable loss.”
