Week four of the top-flight domestic football league is over. Interesting fixtures produced interesting results. First day of the week witnessed an 8-goal thriller between a newcomer and regular league participant last Friday. The revelation team continues to shine, going neck-and-neck with two Banjul-based clubs on top of the table.
While plenty of discussion can be said in the top half of the league table, teams in the bottom half aren’t exceptions too, even if their results are in the negative. The league isn’t done yet. There are over 20 matches left. And it would be too early to get rid of any team at the moment for the title race.
Nonetheless, certain teams have teed off in high gear, while others are struggling to take shape in the early stages of the league. Falcons FC in particular are proving to be unstoppable. They are joint table leaders on 10 points apiece with Real de Banjul and Waa Banjul. The three are among five first division teams yet to taste defeat. Wallidan and Brikama United are the two other unbeaten teams.
Worthy of mention is that two teams are yet to concede goals so far: 3rd-placed Waa Banjul and 8th-placed Brikama United. The former scored five goals while the latter managed to score 2 goals and pocketed 6 points. The Satayba Boys won one and drew three of their four matches.
The defending champions Fortune FC are back to winning ways. The Petroleum boys have jumped out of the relegation zone in week two to secure the 7th spot with just three points behind league leaders in week four. Hope for the title race would be high for them now.
Samger, Banjul United, Team Rhino and Marimoo are the top four teams from bottom respectively. All of them are yet to secure their first win in the league. Marimoo and Team Rhino have two draws and two losses, while Banjul United and Samger each have drawn one and lost three other matches.
These four teams will risk relegation into the second division if they fail to pick up form as soon as possible. While the table leaders cannot afford to slip to stay alive in the title race.
Meanwhile, the Gambia’s premier league has taken a short Christmas and New Year break and is set to resume on January 7th 2022, the football federation announced on its Facebook platform.
