President Barrow has directly spoken about The Gambia’s maiden appearance in the Africa Cup of Nations next month in Cameroon.
The Gambian team will be traveling to the tournament on January 7 after a farewell dinner and flag presentation by the president.
Speaking to The Standard at State House Tuesday, President Barrow who made a personal donation of D1million called on all Gambians to join hand’ because this is history. “So Gambians who love football and even if one is not a football fan one must love your country and since the team is representing our country we all have a responsibility to ensure that they are provided with resources that will make them confortable in Cameroon,” the president said.

He urged Gambians to come forward in their own individual ways to donate to a national cause. “So everybody can come forward with anything, D50, D1000 or just anything. But even without that government will make sure that it provides funds to make the team comfortable in the tournament so that they can be encouraged to work harder,” the president said.
Meanwhile national team players have started arriving in Doha, Qatar for a training camp that will culminate into two friendly matches against Algeria on Monday and Syria on January 5th. The team is expected to fly home on January 6 in time for the farewell dinner and flag presentation later that evening.
