There was a dramatic opening to the new season in Division One with teams enjoying convincing victories and savoring a new stadium, the imposing Live Your Dream Academy in Basori village owned by Real de Banjul.

Host Real de Banjul set the week rolling in Basori, with Salifu Colley and Ebrima Jatta securing them a 2-1 victory against Tallinding United from the Buffer Zone. Real was ruthless and overzealous to show class but Tallinding United was not to be conquered without resistance and they managed to attempt a comeback with a goal in the second half.

At the Independence Stadium on Friday, Bully Drammeh inspired Fortune FC to a one-nil win over Waa Banjul. The Petroleum Boys started the game strongly as expected and in fals of brilliance Assan Njie flicked the ball to one-time national team player, Bully Drammeh who used his left foot and consummating ball skills to tap the ball at the back of the net in the 35th minute. Waa Banjul applied all their tricks fighting from pillar to post but could not prevent Jane Joof’s boys from running away with the first precious three points of the season.

On Saturday, again at the posh Live Your Dream Stadium in Basori, Elite United stunned Mighty Hawks 2-1 in what could well be the first upset of the season. In Yundum, at the National Technical Training Centre, Armed Forces beat Marimoo FC 2-1.

On Sunday Bakau’s BK Millan surprisingly beat Gamtel 3-1. Wally Fofana, Ismaila Sambou and Buba Jammeh scored for BK Milan.

On the same day at Basori, Wallidan came from behind to share points with Brikama United in a one-all draw.

It was a similar score line in Bakau where Banjul United and GPA drew 1-1 in a Banjul derby.

The first week therefore ended with only Fortune and Gambia Armed forces with a clean sheet.
