Jahn Regensburg a German football club based in Regensburg, Bavaria has signed Gambian defender Leon Guwara. The 24-year-old Gambian signed a contract with a German second-division football club until June 2023. The defender had already played for Werder Bremen and Darmstadt 98 in the Bundesliga. Leon Guwara has now abandoned the Dutch fields after three years in Eredivisie for the top German league.

Born in Cologne, Leon who now plays for the Gambia Scorpions national team joined FC Utrecht in 2018 and was loaned to VVV-Venlo last spring. He will now play for Second Bundesligaclub SSV Jahn Regensburg next season.

Guwara has signed for two seasons in Bavaria and will meet Thorsten Kirschbaum again in Regensburg. The goalkeeper and his former clubmate recently swapped the relegated VVV for the number fourteen ranked previous Bundesliga season.

Guwara describes himself through Jahn Regensburg’s club media channels as an ‘attacking strong left-back, who also does not neglect his defensive duties.

The new Gambia international has made 44 Eredivisie appearances in the highest level of professional football in the Netherlands since 2018. At FC Utrecht, partly due to injury, he was never an undisputed basic force. During the 16 games he played his loan to VVV, Guwara could not prevent the Venlonaren from being relegated from the Eredivisie.
