Overview

Nova Scotia-Gambia Association (NSGA) is a registered charity in Canada and an international non-governmental organization in The Gambia. For over 25 years, NSGA has worked with West Africans and Canadians to build healthy and equitable communities in The Gambia and until recently in Sierra Leone. Through education and health promotion initiatives, NSGA staff and volunteers have become a major force in youth and community education in The Gambia. NSGA works to improve health, foster youth leadership, develop skills, and encourage citizenship. NSGA programs cut across all regions of The Gambia. Using Peer Health Education, NSGA has established programs in more than 150 schools in The Gambia.

NSGA’s major approaches are peer health education and interactive community cinema. Using these approaches, the organization delivers community awareness programs for Gambian communities. In the last two decades, NSGA has delivered trainings in schools and communities on sexual and reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, STIs, malaria, leadership and governance, gender education, landmine awareness, environmental education and water sanitation programs.

NSGA provides opportunities for youth, students, professionals, and community members to become involved in its projects at home and abroad. Over 700 work and volunteer placements have been created by NSGA since 1985.
